Heavy duty truck salvage works in a similar way to the far better known salvage industry in cars and light vans. It is a method developed by the insurance industry and the makers of the law we live under. There obviously needs to be some procedure in law which will give an objective ruling on whether or not a vehicle should be kept on the road. The most damning label a vehicle can have is that of “scrap”, because this means that it cannot be used again. No amount of repair work can change this, as a “scrap” classification cannot be undone.

The salvage category is different, in that it can be reversed if the right work is carried out on the vehicle. The classification is first applied when a vehicle is damaged by accident or deliberate vandalism, and the insurance company assesses that the repair would cost a large proportion of the value of the vehicle. This proportion varies depending on the type of vehicle and the state in which the vehicle is registered.

If the repair is economical the vehicle immediately goes for truck salvage. This usually means a change of ownership, but not necessarily. It is possible for the existing owner to buy out the insurance company. This is unlikely to happen with a truck, as there is never any sentimental value attached to a commercial vehicle. If the repair was uneconomical for the insurance company, it is likely to be equally so for the owner. Usually, the insurance company will auction off the salvage truck.

There are specialist industry auctions where you will find wrecked trucks for sale alongside other business vehicles. These auctions are attended by buyers who are intent on buying up cheap trucks they can refurbish and sell. This is likely to happen if they buy many lots, as parts from vehicles which cannot be repaired can often be used to revive those which can. Although these truck salvage auctions are not normally used by the public, you can save your business money by buying there.

There are companies who are registered heavy duty truck salvage buyers, and these will be happy to place your order for you. They take a commission on the final selling price. Even in a specialized market such as this, there are still plenty of trucks being sold. You can have listings from many auctions sent to you by email, and the listings will be in real time and accurate. If you can take one of these trucks and carry out your own repair, you can potentially save thousands.
